Captain Toad and Toadette are out treasure hunting, climbing a structure to get a Power Star. They soon after notice feathers falling from the sky when Wingo, a large bird who is described as "a lover of all things shiny", grabs the star. Toadette attempts to retrieve it while Captain Toad is temporarily knocked over. Wingo makes off with both the star and Toadette, leaving the Captain on his own. Captain Toad must then go through stages collecting Power Stars to reach Wingo and save Toadette.

Once Captain Toad reaches Wingo's fortress, they fight, and after Wingo is defeated, Toadette is rescued and they continue treasure hunting. However, Wingo returns to steal their treasure again and ends up capturing Captain Toad, allowing Toadette to journey on a solo adventure. After another long journey, Toadette saves him, although immediately afterward Wingo reappears, captures Toadette again and blows Captain Toad away.

Marty Silva of IGN gave the game an 8.2/10, criticizing what he believed to be an over-reliance of the GamePad at times, stating "The problem here is that it's controlled both through the right stick and the GamePad's gyrosensor, and the sensor can't be turned off, so I found the camera spinning out of control whenever I moved my wrists. Also, if you're playing only off the GamePad, messages and touch-screen prompts have a tendency to pop up and really obscure your view at important moments." Otherwise, he was praising of the game, mostly to the charm, visuals, and sense of discovery.[13] Arthur Gies of Polygon gave the game of 8.5/10, and was similarly critical of camera issues, claiming they "transcended my crankiness and felt like actual problems", but praised the characters' "outrageous cuteness", remarking "Nintendo games explore their root mechanics thoroughly, finding fun through solid execution and exploration of the idea. Using that as a verb, Captain Toad Nintendos. It Nintendos hard."[14] Chris Carter of Destructoid gave the game an 8/10, and was also similarly praising of the limited focus on Captain Toad and Toadette, stating "No other Mario characters are jumping out and stealing the spotlight here -- it's just the two aforementioned characters and their thirst for treasure that fuels the game." He was, however, critical of a few levels, and for what he opined as little to offer for players who did not like puzzle platformers.[15]

When you purchase the Expansion Pass, three new treasure chests appear in the game's Great Plateau area. Inside one of these chests, Link will find a shirt bearing a familiar crest: the Nintendo Switch logo! The other two chests provide useful in-game items for Link's adventure.

At any given session, four players assume the roles of four characters - Sayuri, Dwayne, Victoria, and ShadowStalker - working cooperatively in missions to raid multi-roomed maps and recover treasure known as Relics. Players face against waves of various undead monsters, including giant bosses, in order to clear rooms, solve various puzzles, and move Relics to a certain point. Whilst recovering a Relic, one player taking the responsibility will be vulnerable, and has to depend on the team for protection. There is a play style system in defeating and defending from monsters called a "Multi-View Action System", including melee attacks, third-person shooting (trailing and over-the-shoulder), and first-person shooting. In the case one or more player falls, they can depend on their teammates for recovery, otherwise if all four players fall, then it is a mission failure. To clear any mission, the Relic must reach a certain point on the map. Or the players must defeat a boss.

The game was announced on 14 January 2015, under its tentative title Project Treasure, via that month's Nintendo Direct presentation in all major regions. Producer Harada was featured in a segment opening up about a game they were working on exclusively for Wii U. The game is a free-to-play online, four-player co-operative action title which any Wii U owner with a Nintendo Network ID could download and join in, provided their console is always online. According to Harada, "four players could work together to complete varied stages" and "[the] basic aim is to clear traps, rout enemies, and seize treasure." Harada then concluded he was unable to disclose the game's official title or release date at that time, but he gave away the tentative title being "Project Treasure" and confirmed "[they are] working very hard on it." The segment closed hinting the game was coming soon.[1][6]

Throughout the announcement segment, an array image featuring four different characters was teased, and no actual footage of the game was shown. On 31 May 2015, during the Japanese Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo released a gameplay trailer, featuring four unique characters fighting zombies in fast-paced melee combat within a labyrinth to find the treasure. The trailer concluded teasing that more information on the game would be revealed in the vague summer window of 2015.[7] A day later, Nintendo of America released the English version of the same teaser trailer following their Nintendo Direct Micro.

Yesterday Nintendo announced that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, the latest Wii U title to be ported to the Nintendo Switch, would be receiving a demo on the Japanese and European eShops. Today, as expected, Nintendo announced that the same demo is now available to download in North America.

If you're itching to try your hand at treasure hunting, you can download the demo for Captain Toad: Treasure Hunter on the North American, European, and Japanese eShops right now. For those of you that don't mind waiting, you can pick up the game for the Nintendo Switch and 3DS when it launches on July 13th.

"We've started a new project that is exclusive to the Wii U," said Harada, who is the game director for fighting series Tekken. "It's an action game where four players work together to complete varied stages. The basic aim is to clear traps, route enemies and seize treasures.

"The game itself is free to download from Nintendo eShop and start playing. Any Nintendo Network user can play, as long as their Wii U is connected to the internet. I can't announce the game's name or launch date yet, but its tentative name is 'Project Treasure,' and we're working very hard on it.
